The Eix Besòs industrial estates are a series of industrial and economic activity areas that cover 175 hectares of land on the right bank of the river Besòs, between the municipalities of Barcelona (districts of Sant Andreu and Sant Martí) and Sant Adrià de Besòs.

The industrial development of the Bon Pastor area began in the first half of the 20th century, with the installation of the Can Sala bleaching and starching factory (1906), the Enric Sanchis factory for bitumen and other chemical products (1907) and the La Maqunista Terrestre i Maritima heavy machinery factory (1918). However, the industrial activity was consolidated in the late 1960s, with the opening of companies such as Mercedes Benz and Henry Colomer, as well as the creation of new industrial estates at other sites on the right bank of the Besòs, such as La Verneda and Montsolís.

The presence of industrial activity in the City of Barcelona must be fostered, due to its capacity for diversifying the city's economic activity, generating innovation and added value and creating stable, high-quality employment. The industrial activity includes not only manufacturing industries, but also a series of companies from other sectors that provide services, such as the logistics, product handling, packaging and the technology associated with industrial products..

The Eix Besòs industrial estates are as follows:

  • Bon Pastor (District of Sant Andreu, Barcelona)
  • Torrent de l'Estadella (District of Sant Andreu, Barcelona)
  • La Verneda Industrial (District of Sant Martí, Barcelona)
  • La Verneda (Sant Adrià de Besòs)
  • Monsolís (divided between Sant Adrià de Besòs and the District of Sant Andreu, Barcelona)

Altogether, around 750 businesses carry out their activities there, including industrial (metallurgy, graphics, plastics, chemical, food, etc.), wholesale commerce, construction, transport and storage companies, among others. 91% of them are small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), with fewer than fifty employees, although there are also some large companies located there. Altogether, they provide 10,000 jobs.

The Eix Besòs industrial estates stand out for their central location, their proximity to residential areas, good road and rail communications and the excellent network of basic and strategic services. Their location inside Barcelona's urban area, their connection by metro and bus and the future La Sagrera intermodal station all make it easier to attract and retain talent while also making the industrial-estate companies attractive. It is also worth noting the proximity of major research and innovation facilities, such as the UPC's Diagonal-Besòs campus, District 22@ and Barcelona Activa's Technological Park.

All of this makes up an industrial area located within Barcelona's urban fabric which retains its industrial and manufacturing identity while incorporating innovative models linked to Industry 4.0 (robotics, IoT, additive manufacturing, Big Data, etc.), the green and circular economy and the social and solidarity economy.
