HEALTH AND QUALITY OF LIFE

The Covid-19 crisis has increased the relevance and necessity of the Health sector, key to the development of the welfare state and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals. New food and consumption models, as well as an economic network in the food sector with a gastronomic presence and prestige in the city, could make it possible to work towards making Barcelona the capital of sustainable food.

The sector accounts for 95,822 jobs and 3,132 companies with salaried employees in the fourth quarter of 2019, representing 8.8% and 4.1%, respectively, of the city’s total. This sector is made up of various distinct and interrelated components: health activity accounts for 82.2% of jobs, health-related social services account for 8.4% of employment, and the pharmaceutical industry accounts for 9.4%. The pharmaceutical and biotechnology industry constitutes a dynamic cluster with a remarkable capacity for research and innovation.

Barcelona City Council is a sponsor of BIOCAT, currently promoting the BCN Health Booster (BCN Health Booster – Barcelona Science Park (ub.edu)) with the Barcelona Science Park and co-organising investment forums (Emprenedoria (comb.cat)) (Catalan site) with COMB, BIOCAT, ESADEBAN and Barcelona Health HUB along with other noteworthy activities.
